OSHA continues to develop its Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings (HIIP) and sets out recommendations to prevent occupational heat exposure:

  • Workers should be encouraged to drink at least one cup (8 ounces) of water every 20 minutes while working in the heat not just if they are thirsty.

  • Water should be cool and provided in a location that is familiar to the workers, near the work, easy to access, and in sufficient quantity for the duration of the work.

  • Electrolytes should be provided for jobs lasting longer than two hours.

  • Ice, applied to the head, neck, armpits, and groin, is an emergency tool to cool a worker.  Submersion in an ice bath can save a life.

Ice
A good rule of thumb is that a worker needs one, seven pound bag of ice per workday for an ice chest.
